The UK Ancestry Visa route is available to Commonwealth citizens who have at least one grandparent born in the UK. This is a popular route that can be taken if the applicant intends to work in the UK.
Length of stay with the UK Ancestry Visa is up to five years after which you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain and finally British Citizenship.
You can apply for this if:
- You are a Commonwealth Citizen.
- You can provide proof that one of your grandparents was born in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.
- Your grandparent is either biological or grandparent by adoption.
- You intend do work in the UK and are able to do so.
- 17 years old or over.
- You have a partner and dependent children under the age of 18, they may be added to your application to join you in the UK.
- Show proof of funds to support yourself and your dependants without relying on public funds in the UK.

What you cannot do:
- Claim public funds
- Switch to this visa from within the UK.

Application must be made online before traveling to the UK. You cannot apply until 3 months before you travel to the UK. You will need to book an appointment at a visa application centre where you will have your biometrics (fingerprints and photograph) taken at your appointment.
A decision will be made on your visa within 4-8 weeks of submission of application.
