TEMPORARY WORKER VISA (TIER 5)

The Temporary Worker visa category provides a range of opportunities for overseas national to adopt short-term work in the UK. This is any form of work that falls under the umbrella of Charitable, Creativity, Sport, Cultural and International and Religious aims. Each category requires its own eligibility route.

You can apply for this Visa under the aim of contributing charity work to the UK. You will need a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) and must present means of sufficient financial independence through duration of your stay. Length of stay is limited to 12 months.

In order to be eligible for the Sporting Visa, the sporting role must be of great contribution and impact to the given field of sport. Likewise, creative workers need to provide a significance to the UK labour market. Successful application requires a certificate of sponsorship. Length of stay will not exceed 12 months.

You may apply for this visa if you wish to undertake religious work in the UK. This can range from preaching to working in a religious order. Length of stay for this visa is open to 24 months.

This visa is for farm workers who wish to work in the UK. You will need a sponsor for this application. You cannot work anymore than 6 months in a 12 month period.

You can apply for this if your intent is to remain in UK for short period of time under the aim of work experience or training (length of stay of 12 months), research or fellowship via an approved government exchange scheme or an Overseas Government Language Programme (length of stay up to 24 months).

You can apply for this Visa if the international law or treaty covers you for contracted work in the UK. Examples include working as a private servant in a diplomatic household and working for a foreign government. Length of stay is open to 24 months for both these circumstances. If the Visa is for contractual service suppliers or independent professionals, length of stay will be up to 6 months in a given 12 month period.

Eligibility:

This Visa is only open to young adults from the following countries:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • Hong Kong
  • Japan
  • Monaco
  • New Zealand
  • Republic of Korea
  • San Marino
  • Taiwan

Each country has a limited quota for how many applicants can take advantage of this visa.

The visa is also open to:

  • British Overseas Citizen;
  • British Overseas Territories Citizen; and
  • British National (Overseas)

 

Length of Stay:

The Youth Mobility Scheme has a limit of 2 years; this length of stay cannot be exceeded for living, working and studying purpose. You can however, leave and enter the UK through the duration of your stay. Furthermore, if you turn 31 during your stay in the UK, you may continue living in the UK for as long as the visa is valid.

Financial Requirements:

In order to be applicable for this visa, you must present evidence of having a minimum of £2,530 in your bank account as a means of independent financial support. Evidence of funds must be presented as being in your account for at least 28 consecutive days in which day 28 is within 31 days of the visa application.

 

Restrictions:

There are instances in which you cannot apply for this visa:

  • If you have previously explored UK under this scheme;
  • If you have any dependents (including financially) under the age of 18;
  • If you plan to work as a professional sportsperson;
  • If you have no access to public funds.

 

Application:

Application for this scheme must be made online before travelling to the UK. You cannot process an application until 3 months before you travel to the UK. Your online application will require for you to attend an appointment at a visa application centre where you will have your fingerprints and photograph (Biometrics) taken.

 

Receiving a decision:

Once application is fully processed, it will take up to 4-8 weeks to receive a decision. Some locations offer a Priority Service as an extra purchasing option for applications made outside of the UK.

 

Extending my Visa:

Extending your visa is not an option but you may have the opportunity to switch to a different visa category such as Start-up Route, Spouse/ dependent visa (depending on family relationships), Skilled Worker Route. It may also be an option to leave the UK and apply for a new visa in your home country.

You must meet particular conditions to be applicable for a Temporary Worker Visa:

 

  • You should hold a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from your Sponsor;
  • You must present how the role will meet requirements of sponsorship;
  • You must be given payment of minimum of the National Minimum Wage;
  • If your sponsor does not certify your maintenance, you must present evidence of sufficient funds for self-maintenance.

 

This Visa will NOT lead to permanent stay in the UK and length of stay will remain between 6 months to 24 months (depending on the visa being applied for).

In order to meet the conditions of the visa, you must:

 

  • Work in the role presented in your certificate of sponsorship and study; and
  • You will not access public funds.
